Aerobic exercise, such as running, cycling, and swimming, has traditionally been associated with improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic health. However, in the last decade, emerging evidence suggests a positive impact of aerobic exercise on gastrointestinal health and the gut microbiome. Several studies indicate that regular aerobic exercise may contribute to a more diverse and balanced gut microbiota, fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria associated with improved digestive function. Exercise-induced alterations in gut microbial composition have been linked to enhanced immune function, reduced inflammation, and a lower risk of gastrointestinal disorders. Moreover, aerobic exercise may promote gut motility, aiding in more efficient digestion and nutrient absorption. Though the field is relatively young, the evidence so far suggests a promising connection between regular aerobic exercise, a healthy gut microbiome, and overall gastrointestinal well-being. As research continues, a clearer understanding of the nuanced interplay between exercise and gut health is emerging.
